Weekly U.S. jobless claims tick upward

The number of new jobless claims filed by Americans unexpectedly ticked upward last week, CNBC reports. Initial claims for state unemployment rose by 4,000 to 277,000, seasonally adjusted, for the week that ended Aug. 15, the U.S. Department of Labor reported early Thursday. Still, the general trend is toward momentum in the labor market, and if that continues, the Fed could raise interest rates later this year.
